We have long sought a fruit source for Pinot Noir and were very pleased that Helen Bacigalupi extended a long term contract from this famed vineyard source. Chateau Montelena made the vineyard famous with the 1973 Paris Tasting and many a great winemaker since has sought to contract fruit from the Bacigalupi family, as their knowledge of this renowned growing region is the key to success. We believe our first bottling of Pinot Noir has captured a fair balance between the varietal’s feminine qualities and fruit concentration, with just the right touches of dried cherry, raspberry and blackberry jam with a kiss of new French oak.
This Pinot Noir is comprised of 100% “Wente Clone,” that produces fruit with a composed style and charac-ter. The cool climate vineyard yielded only a mere 1.5 tons per acre in 2009. The soil type consists of a light tan loam with wonderful air permeation and water drainage. Harvest took place on September 9th with aver-age degrees Brix of 27.2.
The fruit was hand sorted and destemmed into small, open top box fermenters, utilizing 15% whole clusters. Adhering to strict tradition, the grapes in the small fermenters were cold soaked for 5 days until native yeast fermentation began. The wine was carefully pressed after 14 days, followed by native malolactic in 40% new Francois Ferres tight grain, 3 year air dried barrels for a total of 15 months. This Pinot Noir is neither filtered nor fined.
