"Two new wines I have never before tasted from Venge include the 250-case lot of 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Bone Ash, named after their 12-acre estate vineyard in Calistoga. As one might expect from Venge, this is a 20-25 year wine...at the minimum. Dense ruby/purple-hued with beautiful pure blueberry and black currant fruit and full bodied, rich flavors revealing hints of graphite and spicy oak, this rich yet young wine will benefit from 2-3 years of cellaring and drink well over the following 2-3 decades. This classic Cabernet is one of the best Cabernet Sauvignons I have tasted from the north end of Napa Valley."

Wine Profile

Tasting Notes I am very proud to introduce the inaugural release from our estate, The Bone Ash Vineyard. Not having any prior history with these grapes, I am elated to see how this wine has turned out. In spring 2008, we experienced a “frost year.” While yields were considerably lower as a result, the natural thinning of fruit worked very well in the winery. The wines are ripe and complex and show how lowered yields make for wonderful wines. I love the toasty vanillin that envelopes very fresh fruit aromas of blackberry and black cherry. There are even glimpses of dried currants, clove, light black licorice and coffee bean. While very youthful, the palate is brooding and complex with hints of black currant, wood spice and a touch of minerality. Containing some of the more “classical Cab” flavors, it is a bit reminiscent of a left bank Bordeaux. Enjoy over the next 12-15 years or longer.
Vineyard Notes Harvest took place on October 14th with average degrees Brix of 25.5. The ripening was just perfect; never too fast and with excellent tempo. Our yields were a mere 1.25 tons per acre. The cane pruned vines were 18-years-old that vintage. Comprised of Cabernet Clones #7 and #8, these vines’ roots are established very deep which allows the use of minimal irrigation. That struggle makes for wines with excellent complexity.
Other Notes The fruit was hand sorted and destemmed into small, open top stainless steel tank fermenters and time on skins lasted 22 days. Fermentation was completely done utilizing native yeast. The fruit was then lightly pressed, keeping “free run” and “press” fractions separate and aged in 75% new, tight grained French Oak barrels for a total of 22 months. This Cabernet Sauvignon is neither filtered nor fined.
